Stages of Reading
Readers change over time. Books in the I Can Read! series are organized into color-coded levels so you can find the right books as your child learns to read. With I Can Read! books, children develop reading skills at their own pace. With more than 200 titles featuring award-winning authors and illustrators, you can find books at every stage to engage and excite your child.

Books at this level are written for children who are just beginning to match spoken words to printed words. At this level children:
- are just figuring out the concept of a word
- can recite the alphabet with ease
- know some letter sounds
- recognize simple sight words
- notice first letters of words
- write familiar words such as their name

Level 1 books are written with simple sentences using familiar words for readers beginning to sound out words and sentences. At this level, children:
- can follow text from left to right
- read word-by-word rather than create stories to go along with illustrations
- read some common sight words fluently
- notice when they make reading errors
- write short stories

Level 2 books are written with simple text, some challenging words, more complex story lines, longer sentences, and some language play. Children at this stage:
- can read pages with many lines of print
- can figure out new words with less help from the illustrations
- read fluently with expression
- use multiple strategies to read complex words

Level 3 books are written for children who can read independently for long periods of time.
